How to prepare for the GCSE Science Equivalency Exam?
This specification has very limited resources available for it outside of this service. Our team have developed a dedicated course pack for the combined science exam and it is advised that these course materials are used to help you prepare for the exam.
GCSE Science Equivalency Test Information
This exam is an online exam. The timings have been modified to allow you to sit the exam online. Your answers must be submitted online.

Paper-based Exam
The Combined Science equivalency consists of short-form answers along with multiple choice. Questions range from 1 to 6 marks of different lengths and formats.
Please prepare the following for the day of your exam:
- An internet connection capable of video calling (please test before your exam day, you don’t need to install any software for this).
- A web cam and audio capability (please test the set up works).
- An acceptable form of ID
- A pen, paper and scientific calculator.
- A Smartphone (to submit your answers if you complete them on paper).
The online exams are easy to access and you do not need any technical experience in order to be able to do this. The invigilators will connect with you over Google Meets and then share the exams system. The questions will be on-screen with the answer boxes directly underneath for you to type into.
SINGLE AWARD (1 GCSE ) Science is a  requirement of Primary Initial Teacher Training courses.
This GCSE Equivalency Exam has been benchmarked the current Edexcel (IGCSE) Science (Single Award) specification and follows the UK National Curriculum.
This provides the best fit for UK primary teacher trainees with a single award (9-1) (un-tiered -includes foundation and higher) GCSE Combined Science Equivalency award.
This single 2-hour GCSE Equivalency Exam effectively covers the assessment objectives of the Edexcel IGCSE specification. There is No direct assessment of science practical work. This exam provides an excellent foundation to teach the primary science curriculum.
Edexcel GCSE Combined Science revision materials outlined in the information on where to find support can be used. However, it is important to note all other Combined Science GCSEs currently offered **(not IGCSE) are DOUBLE award so use this Combined Science Guide to avoid doing the additional material covered in the double award (2 GCSE) courses.

UCL only accept level 5’s for all GCSE Science qualifications and equivalencies.
In order to get booked in for an extra time exam, you MUST call 020 3488 0960 or email [email protected] to discuss your requirements. It may take longer to get booked in for an exam as we verify your evidence of extra time.
Please be aware: Due to the extended nature of an extra time exam, it is not possible to sit these exams in every available exam slot due to invigilator availability.

I studied for about 6 weeks and spent longer on the Chemistry part as it has never made sense to me. Thankfully I passed first time. I did use the course and it was invaluable with lots of things similar coming up in the exam.

I’m a bit of a ludite and was afraid of taking such an important exam online but even I managed to navigate my way through it with so added stress.
Fingers crossed I pass
Very pleasant experience after the initial shock of having to study again. I actually found the science facts I had to learn interesting and by the end got into a good routine of reading and making notes each evening to a point where it didn’t feel that much of a job.
I covered the course in about 8 weeks and went straight for the exam after a bit of a wobble a couple of days before. I passed with flying colours, level 7!!! I was so relieved and happy to finally think about starting my teaching career. Thank you so much

Signed up in January for the combined science and exam package and passed my exam last week. I studied for 2 hours every day and the recorded webinars were very helpful. I definitely would not have passed without watching these. It was also useful to have the test booklets for each topic. Really happy with the service provided by A Star Equivalency.
A Star are amazing! I bought the course and exam because I felt it was more beneficial to me. The webinars I found very helpful and if I had a question, it was answered quickly by a member of the team. Cannot fault them and would recommend them to anyone.
Passed combined science on my second attempt. Only a couple of issues: one that I had a sickness bug on the day of the exam and would have had to pay a cancellation charge to cancel it and then pay for the exam again. Failed by 5 marks which wasn’t surprising. Secondly, there were at least five questions that were not in the revision pack I bought that were included in the exam. To be fair, I think this was due to them updating the revision packs and exams (I bought mine in September last year). I think I would have been an issue had I not passed second time around but luckily I did, and with a good margin.
This is my second exam with A Star and I can’t fault the process. Booking is easy and there are lots of dates and times available and at short notice. Would recommend.
Hello, Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were ill on the day of your exam. Unfortunately, as the exam had been scheduled with an invigilator it would not be possible to rearrange the exam without incurring a cost.
All of the questions in the exam papers are new questions which will not have appeared in the course, however, the topics covered and the skills needed to answer the questions correctly are all covered in the course. It would not be a true exam if the same questions also appeared in the course, unfortunately.
