A DBS is a document containing information held by the police and government departments that is used by employers and voluntary organisations to help them make safer recruitment decisions.

There are two levels of Disclosures:

  • Standard DBS
  • Enhanced DBS

Anyone who has regular contact with children and/or vulnerable adults in their working environment must have an Enhanced DBS including teachers.

In addition to the information provided on a Standard certificate, the Enhanced certificate involves an additional check with the police, who check if any other information is held on file that may be relevant (for instance, information that has not led to a criminal conviction but may indicate a danger to vulnerable groups). The police decide what (if any) additional information will be added to the certificate using the Quality Assurance Framework.

The involvement of local police forces can mean an enhanced check may take significantly longer than a standard check to be completed.

Additional benefits of using an electronic system are:

  • Speed
We operate the fastest possible DBS checking service in the UK as all applications are processed electronically. The DBS accept applications within one hour and start processing the applications immediately. Currently 85% of all enhanced disclosures are returned to our clients within 14 days.
  • Accuracy
Our error rates are less than 0.1% and the Disclosure and Barring Service wrote to us in May 2012 congratulating us on our consistent low error rate performance
  • No Postage Costs
Our services are fully conducted online and all our computer systems are directly linked with the CBS saving both time and money.

What is Enhanced with Barred List Checks?

This includes all that Enhanced certificate offers, plus a check of the appropriate DBS Barred List. There are two DBS Barred Lists; one for adults and one for children. The lists contain information on whether the applicant is barred from working with either of the two groups. An individual may only be checked against one or both barred lists if their job role is classified as a ‘Regulated Activity’ with children and/or adults under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006.

Who can ask for a DBS check?

Only employers and licensing bodies can request a DBS check. A* Star Equivalency is a licensed (Registered) body and can carry out Enhanced DBS checks for teaching/ school staff. We offer this service free for our teachers from overseas. Job applicants cannot undertake a criminal records check on themselves.

A DBS check has no official expiry date. Any information included will be accurate at the time the check was issued. It is up to an employer to decide if and when a new check is required.

Applicants and employers can use the DBS update service to keep a certificate up to date or carry out checks on a potential employee’s certificate.
